Broken white lines on the road mean that you can change lanes, overtake and even take a U-turn, but with caution and by giving an indicator (gesture) to other trains. Lines are found here.

If you see a straight yellow line on the road, then understand that you can overtake other trains, but cannot go beyond the yellow line. However, the mean varies from state to state. For example, the yellow line on the road in Telangana means that you cannot overtake trains by staying inside the line.

These two straight yellow lines on the road means that you walk in your own lane, do not cross the line and cross it. This should be strictly followed. Because these are the roads where there is a lot of potential for a road accident. On these roads you cannot even do a U-turn and overtake.

If you see a yellow line on the road, but in pieces, then you are allowed to pass over the broken yellow line. You can take a U-turn on these roads and also overtake, but with caution.

Sometimes you will see that in the middle of the road there is a straight yellow line and a piecewise yellow line together. This means that if you are driving towards the broken yellow line then you can overtake, but if you are on the straight yellow line then you are not allowed to overtake.
