Doctors' advice- Depression cases in the elderly increased from 18 to 24%, don't scare them; Explain about social distance, wearing a mask and washing hands and feet

  • About 160 million people over the age of 60 in the country are at high risk of corona
  • Policy Commission sets guidelines for senior citizens in the serious category
  • Tell the elderly about physical distance, i.e., do not touch anyone, do not go near
The highest risk of coronavirus is in senior citizens 60 years of age or older. That is why the government has placed them in the severe category. According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, there are 160 million people aged 60 and over in the country.

The policy commission has also prepared special guidelines for senior citizens. "People who are older and who already have an illness need to be especially careful," it said.

Corona caused an increase in depression in the elderly

Dr. Pragya Rashmi, a consultant psychologist in Hyderabad, says that at present, the incidence of depression among the elderly has increased by 18 to 24 per cent. That is why senior citizens who live alone or with family need to understand more about coronavirus. Fear must be removed from their hearts and minds.

Try to keep yourself calm

Corona has also highlighted many sensitive aspects of families, so there is a need to focus on these matters at this time. "If we try to calm the storm, we may not succeed, but if we calm ourselves down, the storm will calm down on its own," says Rashmi. That is why our focus should be on calming ourselves. Dr. How many ways has Rashmi mentioned.

The elderly and their families need to pay the most attention to these things-

Explain about social distance- Dr. Rashmi says that the word social distance is not connected with our culture. So there are many older people for whom the word is new. Even when we tell them about social distance they don’t understand what it means. So tell them to keep physical distance i.e. not to touch anyone or to avoid getting close to anyone.

Talking on the phone- If you live away from your parents and they are alone, talk to them more. If you used to talk two-three days a week, now take the time to talk to them by video call or normal call. It will not make them feel lonely.

Technical help- There are many elderly people who do not know how to use internet or mobile, it is your responsibility as a family to tell them about this. Teach them to use the internet. If you encourage them, it will make sense. Don’t think in advance that the elderly can’t do what they can too.

Increase social space- Older people are now realizing that they don't have to meet and talk to anyone. Because of this they are getting depressed. Explain to them that you can talk to those loved ones and the people around them, meet them, just be careful. It will take away loneliness. Avoid embarrassment and shyness and talk to people you have never talked to.

Fear must be removed - Senior citizens must also be helped to remove fear from their hearts and minds. They have to be supported. Be happy instead of saying don't be afraid, nothing will happen to you; Let them know that your fears are natural, they are at risk at this time but nothing will happen to you if you are a little careful.

Give Emergency Contact - For elderly people who live in cities and live alone at home, give them the contact number of the nearest grocery store, vegetable seller, dairy, medical store. So that they can talk to him on any kind of emergency. If such a person lives around you, take care of them.

Keep a calm mind: The strength to face the elderly comes from one thing and that is worship. But all the monasteries are closed at this time. They need to be told that the temple-mosque-church-gurdwara is closed, but God is not closed. You can do spiritual work at home as before, so that you can have peace of mind.

Keep the elderly happy with the family, realizing that their level of hygiene will be different

Dr. "Corona has also shown a new side of our family," says Rashmi. This is happening after a very long time, when all the members of the family are together. In such a situation, if the elders say anything, there is a big quarrel in the house.

Other people in the family ask him to wear a mask. But one thing you have to understand at this point is that their level of hygiene will be different from the rest of the family. Do not intimidate them in such a situation, you keep yourself alert. It will make them happy. There are also families where the elderly are alert but others are vulnerable.

Eat hot food to senior citizens, avoid eating anything outside

Sachin Daga, chief hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgeon at Hyderabad-based Medicare Hospital, says senior citizens are anywhere but socially distant. The disease is not going to go away now, so for the next six months, senior citizens should keep a distance of three feet if they meet anyone. Also, be sure to wear a mask when you go out. Wash your hands and feet whenever you do any activity. If you stay at home, you need to wash your hands periodically. Eat clean and warm food. Don't eat anything outside.

Increase immunity by adopting Ayurvedic prescriptions to avoid corona

Allopaths do not yet have a drug that can be used to treat corona. Such ayurvedic recipes can be effective in it, so that cold-fever does not occur. So take cloves, pepper, cinnamon, parsley, ginger and boil it in a glass of water. Drinking it will not cause cold-fever. Immunity will increase. Symptoms of corona include colds, coughs and fevers.

Only four to five percent of older people need an ICU

See a doctor if anyone has a cold or fever. There is no need to be afraid of it. It is also a viral infection. Only four to five percent of people need an ICU. Half of them recover. In addition people need to be notified to stop the chain. Do not discriminate against them.

The elderly suffering from the disease need the most care at this time

Dr. Tendulkar says more attention needs to be paid to senior citizens who smoke, who have a cough-like illness, lung or heart disease, asthma. In addition, people who are taking medication for diabetes and blood pressure need to be extra careful. The patient is already at risk for these diseases, but if for some reason, the corona comes, then the risk of life in these people increases.

Voluntary organizations also came forward to help the elderly

At this time all the voluntary organizations are coming forward to help the elderly. One such organization is the Grandparents Foundation. Munishankar, director of the institute, says senior citizens are most in need of mental support at this time. Many senior citizens are not getting out of the house, which is why many people are suffering from depression. His organization helps counsel such senior citizens.
