  • Science Day is celebrated every year on 28 February.
  • On this day 'Raman Effect' was discovered.
  • This day is dedicated to Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.

National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated every year on 28 February in India to remember the remarkable work of Indian physicist CV Raman in the field of light scattering. Raman is known as one of the greatest scientists and an inspiration to many. On the occasion of National Science Day, theme based science communication activities are organized across the country.

National Science Day is celebrated every year on 28 February to mark and recognize the contribution of scientists in the development of the country. On this day, in 1928, Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman made an important discovery in the field of spectroscopy, called the 'Raman Effect'. The day is dedicated to the discovery of the 'Raman Effect'. CV Raman was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his work. This year the theme of National Science Day 2022 is 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted scientists and people interested in science on National Science Day and called upon them to reaffirm their commitment to harness the power of science for human progress.

Let us know the special things about this day with the help of the question-answers given below.

1. When was the Raman effect discovered?

The Raman effect was discovered by the great scientist CV Raman on February 28, 1928.

2. What is Raman Effect?

The Raman effect states that when a wave of light emerges from a material, some part of this light wave gets scattered in a direction which is different from the direction of the incoming light wave. The blue color of sea water and sky is due to this reason.

3. In which year was the request to declare February 28 as National Science Day made?

In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technical Communication (NCSTC) urged the Government of India to declare 28 February as National Science Day. The government accepted his request and declared that day as National Science Day.

4. What is the main purpose of National Science Day?

The basic objective of National Science Day is to create awareness among people about the importance of science and its uses.

5. When was the first National Science Day celebrated?

The first National Science Day was celebrated on February 28, 1987.

6. What is the theme of National Science Day for the year 2020?

The year 2020 is dedicated to the contribution of women in science. For this reason, the theme of National Science Day 2020 is 'Women in Science'.

7. Who organizes programs on the occasion of National Science Day?

The National Council for Science and Technology Communication of the Department of Science and Technology has been designated as the nodal agency for coordinating and organizing the celebration of National Science Day across the country.
