5 planets will be seen in a row this evening: why is this happening, how will we be able to see, when will it happen again; Answers to 5 important questions
You often see Moon and Venus in the sky, but today you will be able to see 5 planets together in a row. This is an astronomical coincidence. According to NASA scientist Bill Cook, on March 28, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Uranus and Mars will appear together in the night sky. It can be seen from all parts of the world.
Why will 5 planets appear together, will it have any effect, how will we be able to see? Bhaskar is answering 5 such important questions related to this incident in the explainer…

Question-1: What is the appearance of many planets together in the sky called?
Answer: When some planets are seen in a straight line, then it is called Planetary Alignment. This is not a unique astronomical phenomenon, but a kind of optical illusion. Think of it like all the planets revolve around the Sun. When some planets gather on one side of the sun for a short time, it appears that the planets are around each other. Some people also call them 'parade of planets'.
Question-2: How do 5 planets appear in a straight line i.e. how is planetary alignment?
Answer: There are a total of 8 planets in our solar system. They all revolve around the sun. However, the speed, path and time taken by these planets to revolve around the sun are different. See the speed, time and orbit of the planets in orbiting the sun in the slide below…
The 8 planets of the Solar System do not revolve around the Sun in a perfectly flat surface. If the sun is considered as a ball placed in the middle of the planets, understand that a vertical and a horizontal line are cutting it. In this case, we can consider the vertical line as the flat surface in which most of the planets orbit. That is, most of the planets are revolving around the Sun in this surface.
But as we told earlier that all the planets are not moving in a completely flat surface. According to the picture, Mars revolves around the surface being formed at an angle of 6.3 degrees from this surface. Similarly, the orbits of other planets are also revolving in different inclined orbits. Although their inclination is very less.
Due to the difference in time, speed and path, they keep on making different combinations at different times even while moving in their orbits. Like- sometimes Mars, Venus will be seen in a straight line, sometimes 5 planets. One such alignment is going to be made on March 28, in which 5 planets will appear in a line when viewed from the Earth in the western direction.
Question-3: In which direction will these planets be seen in the sky? Which planet will be visible the most?
Answer: According to NASA, just after the sun sets, one has to look towards the Western Horizon. You will see these five planets spread from the horizon to the middle of the sky. But don't delay. After sunset, the planets Mercury and Jupiter will sink in the horizon line after about half an hour. If the sky is clear then these five planets can be seen from anywhere on the earth.
Venus is expected to be the brightest among these five planets. Mercury and Jupiter can be seen near the horizon. Although spotting Uranus can be a bit difficult. Mars and Moon will be seen very close to each other. According to a report by Edinburgh University, during this alignment some planets will appear more clearly than others. The brightness of both Venus and Jupiter is high, so they can be seen easily.
Question-4: Can these planets be seen with normal eyes without any instrument?
Answer: If you look away from the source of some strong light, then maybe you can easily see some planets without any equipment. The brightness of Jupiter, Venus and Mars is strong, so they can be seen easily. Venus will be the brightest in the sky and Mars will be seen near the moon with a red glow. Mercury and Uranus can be difficult to spot, as they will be fainter. In this case binoculars will be required. If you are really interested in astronomy, then you have a great chance to see Uranus ie Saturn. which is not usually visible. You can see it just above Venus.
Question-5: When did such an astronomical coincidence happen before and when will it happen again?
Answer: The last such incident took place in June 2022. When Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Arun (Uranus) appeared together in the sky.
